We formed Amnis because we loved the idea of making a permanent piano quartet like the established string quartets. Since performances of piano quartet are usually formed on a short-term basis like at festivals, we're differentiated by a synergy that can only be attained through a dedication required of high level ensembleship.
Based on our cultural backgrounds we have made it our goal to highlight under-represented pieces, specifically by female composers from Korea and the US. Utilizing our connections at Seoul National University we've been performing and commissioning pieces hoping to increase the awareness and popularity of these and other undiscovered works.
Amnis at the 50th Fischoff Competition
The Amnis Piano Quartet is a New Haven-based ensemble comprised of violinist Minkyung Lee, violist Matthew McDowell, cellist Jenny Bahk, and pianist Linda Lee. They've won prizes in the 50th Annual Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, Premio Renzo Giubergia Competition, Yellow Springs Chamber Music Competition (Grand prize and Audience prize), Oneppo Series Competition, and the Yale Chamber Music Society Competition. They were also finalists in the recent Coltman competition, and semi-finalists in the 2024 Concert Artists Guild Competition. Passionate about the performance and commission of underrepresented composers, Amnis has made it their priority to program female composers, and specifically Korean female composers.
The quartet began collaborating together under the tutelage of Ettore Causa during their graduate studies at the Yale School of Music. During their first semester of formation, the ensemble was selected to perform in the Yale School of Music’s Vista Chamber Music concert and soon after won the Oneppo Concert Series Chamber Music Competition. They have concertized across the Northeast United States and have upcoming concerts and competitions in Michigan, New York, Maryland, Philadelphia, Texas, Ohio, Italy, and South Korea. The quartet has worked extensively with Yale faculty members Ettore Causa, Wei-yi Yang, Boris Berman, and the Horszowski Trio, and has collaborated in performances with artists like Paul Watkins and Tai Murray. The individual members hold degrees from Seoul National University, Colburn Academy, the Juilliard School, the International Menuhin Music Academy (Switzerland), and Yale University.
